A Short History of Landings On Alien Planets
While Curiosity is certainly the most advanced and most capable spacecraft ever deployed to another planet, it comes from a long line of predecessors. Check out PopSci’s gallery of robotic interplanetary explorers at the link above.
Pictured above is Venera 7, the first spacecraft to land and transmit from another planet in December 1970, beaming back nearly an hour’s worth of transmissions over a several weeks before the Venusian atmosphere rendered it silent.
